Over the years, I've come across numerous claims about the beauty and health benefits of collagen for skin, hair, and nails. For example, WebMD: “Collagen is a protein responsible for healthy joints and skin elasticity. It’s in your bones, muscles, and blood, comprising three-quarters of your skin and a third of the protein in your body. As you age, your existing collagen breaks down, and it gets harder for your body to produce more.”.
I’ve tried collagen supplements for a few months, hoping to see noticeable results, but I didn't experience any significant changes. Consequently, I stopped using them altogether.
However, my interest in collagen was reignited when I stumbled upon Facebook postings by Dr. Anthony Youn, a Holistic Plastic Surgeon, who emphasized the importance of collagen for skin health (https://www.dryoun.com/). He wrote about the beauty benefits of collagen. “Your skin is composed of 70-80% collagen. Unfortunately, collagen production naturally begins to decline in your mid-twenties, thinning at a rate of about 1% per year. This can result in fine lines and wrinkles, increased crepiness, and more visible bruising.”
Driven by the lure of better-looking skin, I decided to give it another shot when a client offered me their CBD Holistik Wellness BEAUTY product, containing 10 mg of CBD and collagen. The combination seemed to make a difference to my face. In fact, I was featured in an infomercial about this on Green Bee Life (https://tinyurl.com/2axu6ehj)
My contract with this client ended, but by then I was ‘hooked’ on collagen and the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD. So, I continue to take collagen powder that I could buy at my local health food stores.
I fractured my ankle in early April 2023 which I blogged about on my website (https://tinyurl.com/ya9cbz85). My research indicated that collagen was crucial for bone healing. BUT I had to increase the dosage to 30 grams daily. As I mention in this blog, I was doing everything possible to heal my ankle including lots of CBD/THC to reduce inflammation and pain.
Remarkably, by August, my ankle had healed about 95% - faster than anticipated. Unexpectedly, I also noticed significant changes in my face. People began asking if I had undergone cosmetic procedures like a facelift or injectables, to which I respond with a 'no.' It was truly astounding to see the positive impact collagen had on my skin, and I was thrilled that I didn't need surgery or expensive treatments. Funny, because earlier this year I was thinking of having injectables and I had even started to check out having an eyelid lift. But didn’t.
Incidentally, while talking to a 50 y.o. friend who was troubled by her 'droopy' eyelids, I took a closer look at mine in the mirror for the first time in months. To my surprise, my droopy eyelids had improved dramatically. I hadn't seen them look this good in years - all thanks to collagen! Instead of considering costly procedures like injectables or eyelid lifts, a simple collagen supplement costing around $25 per month worked wonders, without any negative side effects. I absolutely love it!
I've been taking vitamins, including Vitamin K, for decades to address my tendency to bruise easily. Coincidentally, as I was writing this blog, I came across Dr. Youn's quote (see above), which mentioned 'more bruising' because of collagen deficiency. It struck me that I've been bruising less frequently than earlier this year - could this be due to the increase in collagen intake as well?
As a result of these positive experiences, collagen and CBD have become essential additions to my daily supplement regimen, alongside my other vitamins. I'm excited to observe how the skin on the rest of my body improves over time, and I'll be sure to report back in a few months.
To Health and Happiness!
BTW I'm not against plastic surgery/injectables, etc. Whatever works for you and your budget is great for you!!
